Jermyn Street’s Open Door Series will be honouring the brands and businesses that make our street the home of gentleman’s style, and the pinnacle of British craftsmanship, by spotlighting your favourite brands, and the people behind them, as we invite you through our doors once more!
The Weiss Gallery, owned by Mark Weiss, a leading specialist dealer in Tudor, Stuart and Northern European old master portraiture, is proud to call Jermyn Street home.
The gallery was founded in 1985 and originally located on Albemarle Street before moving to 59 Jermyn Street in 2003. Mark’s fifty-year career has consistently made important sales to international museums and private collectors: his first notable discovery being in 1977, with the sale of the earliest known portrait of Queen Christina of Sweden, which he sold to the National Museum of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Since then, the gallery has sold paintings to, amongst others, the National Portrait Galleries in London and Edinburgh; Tate Britain; the Louvre Abu Dhabi; the Yale Center for British Art; the Art Gallery of South Australia; and to the Royal families of both Holland and Denmark.
Nestled in the heart of St James’s, it is thought that The Weiss Gallery is the only purpose-built gallery to remain in the area and, with its impressive interior and fantastic original sky-light, you can see why. It offers visitors the opportunity to quietly engage with their museum-quality paintings, without the distractions of bustling crowds. As well as hosting significant exhibitions at the gallery, the business also participates annually at TEFAF in Maastricht, which is considered to be the leading art fair in the world.
The gallery publishes regularly and their catalogues are coveted by international libraries and enthusiasts alike. In addition to their stock catalogues, they consistently publish new research to coincide with their series of exhibitions dedicated to singular artists, which are often the first of their kind. For example, their 2015 exhibition, which focused on their collection of 8 portraits by the international court artist Frans Pourbus the Younger (1569 – 1622), represented the largest private exhibition of his work in modern times. Equally, their 2016 exhibition was dedicated to the oeuvre of Cornelius Johnson (1593 – 1661), one of Charles I’s favourite artists, and with nearly thirty portraits it was the largest show devoted to the artist to date.
